How long will my cat need to take Senvelgo® for?

As diabetes is usually a long-term disease most cats will be on Senvelgo® for life. However, there are some exceptions as some cats can go into what is known as diabetic remission. Always follow your vets advice for dosing and revisits and if your vet feels that remission is likely they can talk to you about how to proceed.

What time of day should I give Senvelgo®?

Senvelgo® is a convenient once daily, oral solution and you can choose whatever time of the day suits you to administer it to your cat, but you do need to give it at approximately the same time each day.

What do I do if I forget a dose?

If you accidentally forget to give a dose, please administer the missed dose as soon as possible on the same day. It might be a good idea to check that no one else in your household has given it first, just in case.

What do I do if I give the wrong dose?

If you accidentally give a smaller dose than prescribed by your vet then please return to the appropriate dose the following day. If however, a higher dose than prescribed has accidentally been administered please contact your vet for advice. With an overdose of Senvelgo® you do not need to worry about your cat’s blood sugar going too low (hypoglycaemia).

Do I give Senvelgo® if my cat is vomiting, not eating or seems unwell?

If your cat is vomiting, not eating or seems unwell please check your cat’s urine for ketones if you can. Regardless of whether you can check for ketones or not, do not give Senvelgo® and ring your vet clinic for advice.

What do I do if I find ketones in my cat’s urine?

If there are ketones in your cat’s urine it is important that you do not administer Senvelgo® and that you ring your vet for urgent advice. If your cat is also unwell your cat needs to be seen by the vet as soon as possible. Cats with ketones in their urine are at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis and so prompt treatment is important. Luckily, DKA doesn’t occur very often, and most diabetic cats will never develop this condition.

Do I need to clean the syringe?

If your oral syringe needs cleaning, please do not wash it with water, but it can be wiped with a dry clean cloth.

How long will it take for my cat’s diabetic symptoms to improve?

While an improvement in your cat’s blood sugar level is likely to take place within 1 week,3,4 an improvement in your cat’s diabetic symptoms may take a bit longer. Every cat is different, but most cats will show signs of improvement in around 1 month.

Do I need to give Senvelgo® with food?

Senvelgo® can be given with or without food, either directly into your cat’s mouth or with a small amount of food to ensure the entire dose is taken at once. If administered with a small amount of food, it is then fine to give the rest of your cat’s meal.

What do I do if my cat develops diarrhoea or loose poo?

Some cats can have diarrhoea or loose poo when on Senvelgo®, however this effect is usually temporary and tends to resolve within 1 week. If your cat has diarrhoea lasting longer than a couple of weeks, or if they become unwell, please contact your vet clinic.

Please let your vet know if you have any questions about your cat’s health.
